A Great Gift
One of the greatest gifts I have been given in life is a mother who is a reader. I remember seeing her read often . . . even with the challenge of raising five children, there was time to read. I think I was in high school when I caught her one day reading an encyclopaedia.
I thought of this memory when I read this email today from allprodad.com . . .
"One sociologist, looking over 8,000 years of human history, writes that the measure of wealth is the ability to own a book and be able to read it. Literacy is the ultimate luxury. And yet, in that regard, our country is becoming poorer and poorer. Instill a love of reading into your children by reading books with them and discussing its contents. This could include novels they’re reading in school or supplementary reading. Make your children truly rich in spirit – read with them."
Its been my privilege and joy to read often to both of my kids and now to my two grandsons.
One of my mentors used to say "readers are leaders and leaders are readers!" I've repeated that often to others . . .
I have much to be thankful for, but today I am most thankful for my role-model-mom and for my wonderful grandsons that I can pass it on to. I love to hear the words, "Read a book to me, grandpa!"
