A Great Gift
One of the greatest gifts I have been given in life is a mother who is a reader. I remember seeing her read often . . . even with the challenge of raising five children, there was time to read. I think I was in high school when I caught her one day reading an encyclopaedia.
I thought of this memory when I read this email today from allprodad.com . . .
"One sociologist, looking over 8,000 years of human history, writes that the measure of wealth is the ability to own a book and be able to read it. Literacy is the ultimate luxury. And yet, in that regard, our country is becoming poorer and poorer. Instill a love of reading into your children by reading books with them and discussing its contents. This could include novels they’re reading in school or supplementary reading. Make your children truly rich in spirit – read with them."
Its been my privilege and joy to read often to both of my kids and now to my two grandsons.
One of my mentors used to say "readers are leaders and leaders are readers!" I've repeated that often to others . . .
I have much to be thankful for, but today I am most thankful for my role-model-mom and for my wonderful grandsons that I can pass it on to. I love to hear the words, "Read a book to me, grandpa!"

In the health world, there is a saying that we are what we eat, and this is true. It is also true that we are what we read. In fact, we “are” what we continually allow to enter in through our senses! What we allow our eyes to see, our ears to hear, and our minds to think about cannot help but influence who we ultimately become.
While the people of the world are busy reading “fluff,” listening to talk radio, and watching the sex, violence, adulteries and crime, both on television and at the movies, Christ's true church, called to be separate from the world, are concentrating their time and efforts on those things that are more edifying, such as the Word of God and other writings that tend to draw one into closer communion with Him. The Apostle Paul reminds us “Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.” (Phil 4:8).
One of our favorite web sites is http://www.swordofthelord.us because it offers (free to download) many of the writings of the great preachers and authors of the past, those godly men who were not afraid to speak the truth. Some were even imprisoned or died for their faith. In today’s world, things have changed considerably. Not many church-goers are willing to be inconvenienced, let alone martyred for their faith! Evidence of that fact can be found at the weekly Bible study or prayer meeting to see how few of the "faithful" are willing to take time from their busy schedules to attend. It is as if God is placed on the back burner, only to be "brought out" when it is convenient. How different is the (visible) church today! Here in the U.S., we think persecution is when someone lashes out verbally when we tell them all roads do not lead to God.
Not only are there many great books, sermons, and articles available for download from the above-mentioned site, but there is also a link to Sermon Audio where many wonderful sermons can also be downloaded free (in MP3 format). As believers, we are commanded to come out and be separate from the world. What does that mean practically? One way is to be different from the world in what we take in through our senses. Perhaps it would be good to take inventory of what it is we spend our time on. Our life has changed considerably since we began not only reading the Word of God daily, but also supplementing that reading with the wonderful books, sermons and articles found on these two web sites.
